This guide will show you how to run the OTA updater on your device to get the latest releases of our firmware.
From time to time, we release firmware updates to improve the experience of using or devices. Applying these updates is now very easy using OTA (Over The Air) Updater.
Firmware releases will be notified on our Twitter account so be sure to follow us! @droidplayerUK
* It is strongly advisable before you update your firmware, that you first, turn of the box and unplug for 10 seconds before powering back up and then taking the below steps.
Firstly, navigate to OTA updater on your home screen (if not showing on homescreen, go into My Apps) and select it (Dual core owners, it will be in ALL APPS)
*NOTE: If you are presented with a pop-up asking to grant permission for OTA to have SuperSU access please choose ALLOW or GRANT
Once in OTA Updater, scroll along to the ROM tab. From this screen you can see the ROM version you currently have installed on your system and any available updates will be shown at the bottom. NOTE: Sometimes, if you havent removed the power from your DroidPlayer for sometime, the Available Update may not show, in which case, scroll down and selct Available Updates, this will then make the update appear.
Select the Available Updates option and if one is available you will see the update dialogue appear
Choose Download
Once download is complete you will see the option to ‘Flash’. Choose this
Clean Install vs Update
Now, you have the following choices.
Wipe Date – This is like a factory reset. It erases all data on the box, installs the latest firmware and brings you back to the welcome screen to setup WIFI like you did when you first received the box from us.
Wipe Cache – This will just update the firmware with the latest additions/changes we have made. It leaves your logins, downloaded apps and personal settings on the player untouched.
For this guide we will just choose Wipe Cache and then choose install
Choose Install again and your box will reboot into the flashing screen
Once completed, the box will boot into the Android homescreen.
*It is strongly advised that you wait at least 4 minutes for the new update to take effect and update all the existing apps. You will most likely be met with several notifications for allowing google to verify apps. Choose decline (or accept, up to you) to each of these notifications. Once the notifications stop appearing, you know that your update is complete.
You are now ready to enjoy the latest update.
instructions were very useful however still unable to view films and uk sport
what happens next?
There appears to be a lot of buffering on the box and our tv is a smart 3d latest version.
further input needed to open different menus as it keeps referring to
no log ?????????
Buffering usually occurs when a stream is trying to be watched that is also being accessed by many others. We don’t have any influence on such streams. We are about to release a brand new update to Kodi which should see some add-ons work better.
The OTA function has never worked on my M8N box. I follow the instructions above but the box will not connect to the data source hence no download? Please help.
Hi, have you tried clearing the cache? Search our blog for ‘fixing teething issues OTA’
Hi there, I have exactly the same problem after I upgraded this evening
Hi, please try installing the Firmware manually using instructions from here https://www.gostreamer.com/how-to/installing-android-firmware-for-all-droidplayer-models/
Hi just updated my firmware following the instructions above all was ok exept my remote will not work now ! any help or advice would be appreciated thanks.
When I ota updater finished downloading it just went back to the all apps screen. Nothing popped up saying flash or anything and when I go back to the ota updater it is just a black screen now and it didn’t update the system. Any tips?
Hi, check our post for fixing issues with OTA Updater here https://www.gostreamer.com/forum/fixing-teething-issues-with-ota-updater/
OK update to the above..
seems that we are forced to use a wifi connection to do the OTA updates.. which is annoying, since all my boxes are networked.. anyway at least I can see the OTA downloading.. hopefully it will complete the update of my MX box to v1.8.5 an it will fix the little niggles..
Hi, yes, apologies, OTA (Over The Air) only works on wifi. Weve tried sourcing a better updating client that allows ethernet updates but to no avail so far.
I just did the ROM update on the OTA app to 1.8.8-OTA on my DroidPlayer MXQ box and now the remote doesn’t work properly. Any advice/tips on how to fix this would be VERY much appreciated!!!
Hi, We would recommend a manual firmware install using the instructions found here: https://www.gostreamer.com/how-to/installing-android-firmware-for-all-droidplayer-models/
I did the ota update last night and everything was absolutely fine, i have went to put the box on today and the wifi no longer works, can you help with this
Hi, which unit was this with? Can you do a manual install of the firmware to resolve? Sometimes OTA has a funny turn. As it’s an open-source firmware, we don’t have a great deal of control over it I’m afraid. Instructions for SD card install are here: https://www.gostreamer.com/how-to/installing-android-firmware-for-all-droidplayer-models/
I have done all this and seems fine, the problem I have is that all that its all changed, I cant watch tv shows, latest episodes, how can I solve this, Thanks
Which add-on where you using to watch latest episodes and TV shows?
Hi I completed the OTA updater which went fine but now I can’t watch any TV shows/live TV/ movies. I was using exodus. Pleas assist.
Hi
Give us an email to discuss the issue support@gostreamer.com
hi,
i tried to update my OTA updater on my droidplayer box (built 2015), i follwoed your instructions above, however when i got to flash the update the system seems to hang after pressing install twice. All i can see is the folder with the arrow in it and the text Gostreamer mxq (v1.9.2) – no robot image. Ive left it for 10 minutes and theres no auto install/update happening. Please help.
Thank you.
Hi. WHen you say you can see a folder with an arrow in it. Is this when looking at the contents of your SD card? Have you extracted the 3 files onto the root of your SD card?
Hi, no its when the window says flash update, so i dbl clck on the flash cmd, the next operation should show me the android robot but instead it just shows the gostreamer update folder on a black screen within the OTA application (not in home scren, or an explorer type window or the root folder embeded in the android operating system). Weird!!
Hi,
I was hoping you could help me.
I am having problems loading Kodi; and I have done everything I can think of to fix it. I have tried reboots, factory resets, clearing the cache and OTA updates.
I am still having the same problem; Kodi wont load, it insists that there is no internet connection yet I have looked into settings and the wifi strength is good and connected. I am in the correct time zone and I can get onto the internet fine when not using Kodi.
I have tried using the ethernet cable to boost the connection and I have tried it without, and in both instances the same problem continues to occur.
I also have another Kodi box which continues to work fine.
I would greatly appreciate it if you could offer any help or any other suggestions for fixing the problem.
Kind Regards,
Matt Robinson.
Hi Mathew, Have you used an SD card to completely reinstall the firmware again? https://www.gostreamer.com/how-to/installing-android-firmware-for-all-droidplayer-models/

Hi GS Tech,
How do you do the manual install when the zip file downloaded by the OTA does not have the typical “3 files” in it?
The file downloaded by OTA is: droidplayer_mx__1.8.5.zip
Inside it has the following 3 folders and 4 files…
data
META-INF
system
boot.img
bootloader.img
logo.img
recovery.img
There is no .aml file and .zip file like the manual install states,
Will this still work if I extract the OTA downloaded .zip to the root of the SD card?
Thank you
Hi, the files that OTA downloads and installs are different to the files we supply as a manual firmware download from our firmware pages. OTA deals with files in its own way and shouldnt need any input from a user as it will carry out the update automatically inside the box. Our firmware download pages give a manual way of reflashing the device. If you have any more questions head over to our forum https://www.gostreamer.com/forum/
i can down load kodi any more i have the g8
Hi, I have a Gbox MX2 and have updated the firmware from this site. Thank you for that, however I still have Android 4.2.2 and would like to get 5 or later so I can install Kodi. The OTA updater ID is DP_MX and when I follow the instructions above, trying to get “Available Updates”, I get the following message:
“Error fetching update info: An unknown error has occurred!”
Yes, I am connected to the internet.
Any suggestions to get to a newer version of Android?
